School Pixel is a video game built around a font — one drawn from a workshop with 130 New Zealand children. Moving through underground landscapes of flat colours, imagination is allowed interpretive space within a grid-based world. Players navigate Drillbot in search of Energy Letters to continue its adventures.

Mining Raw Letters has produced two contributions for the 2026 inaugural cycle of HausCode, a research and development initiative of Haus der Kunst Munich:

(1)
A “For Children” School Pixel level inspired by the exhibition “For Children: Art Stories since 1968” at Haus der Kunst Munich. Drillbot drops through the towering blocks of Olafur Eliasson; dimmed lights and staged mirrors echo Antoine Catala’s synthetic garden; an Ernesto Neto–inspired zone slows Drillbot into calm and quiet; Harun Farocki’s bedtime stories become an icy “ship with teeth” to enter. Exploration-focused and friendly for all ages, the For Children level invites players to chase the high score.

(2)
A “For Children” School Pixel game editor draws on childhood memories of pixel painting on a Macintosh Plus. Its friendly interface invites world-making. Go to MAKE to carve paths, paint landscapes and type words to create your own level — test play and submit to the SHOW!

Produced with Haus der Kunst Munich for the HausCode Studio.

Notes
This version of the School Pixel is optimised for a desktop environment. Tablets also function; however, you may need to switch to the smaller “floating keyboard” in the game editor.
